Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery is nationally a leading unit and serves as a tertiary referral center for Otorhinolaryngology. It is located at the University Hospital of St. Cyril and Method campus and is part of the University Hospital and the Medical School of Comenius University in Bratislava.

The department offers complex diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation services for patients with the ORL and head and neck diseases focusing on complex diagnostics and surgical treatment. University ORL HNS department has activities in research with national and international collaboration. Provides under-gradual (general medicine, dental medicine) and post-gradual education (PhD, residency training in ORL and Head and Neck Surgery). The department is one of four national centers offering education in ORL on residential basis with subsequent board examination. Residents from different hospitals stay two years at their residential stay. The department is also the only institution in the country offering post-gradual education in Phoniatrics.

The department offers daily care in six outpatient offices (covering general ENT, otology, pediatric ORL, head and neck surgery including oncology and reconstruction, endocrine surgery, swallowing and voice disorders) located in the outpatient sector of the University Hospital. In the inpatient sector there are further offices covering vestibular disorders and audiology. Audiology section of the department offers full range of audiological diagnostics. Two fully equipped operation theatres are available at the Operating theatres unit and we use one further theatre located close to the inpatient unit used for less complicated and day case surgeries. Surgeries are offered to adults and children of the age of three years and above. Whole range of surgeries is being performed focusing on otology, rhinology, head and neck, salivary, thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Department of ORL HNS  of the Comenius University and the University Hospital is the largest center for hearing rehabilitation with middle and inner ear implants. Slovak Centre for Cochlear Implantation is affiliated to the department.

RESEARCH

Research activities are focused on screening, diagnostics and treatment of congenital and acquired hearing disorders, functional sequalea after head and neck diseases treatment, identification of novel molecular markers in the head and neck diseases and the others.

Our research teams welcome new under- and post-gradual students. Available topics amongst others are: hearing rehabilitation using implantable hearing devices, identification of genetic causes of deafness, screening and early detection of hearing impairment in children, complications of head and neck inflammatory diseases, functional problems after head and neck surgeries and its management, novel molecular markers in the head and neck tumors.

Some of the most valuable outcomes of translational research are clinical and legal implementation of national newborn hearing screening in 2006 (together with the Pediatric ORL department of Children’s Hospital in Bratislava); implementation of the CI program and the first cochlear implantation in Slovakia (1994), first national screening of hereditary hearing loss (2010- 2014 together with the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology, Biomedical Research Center at the Slovak Academy of Sciences). The department pioneered several surgical strategies such as brain stem implant, active middle ear implants or bone anchored hearing prostheses.

The department runs a temporal bone dissection lab with two fully equipped work stations. Special statistics software for otology is available as is hardware and software for objective testing of cochlear and vestibular part of the inner ear.

The department participates in several research grants (APVV, VEGA, Comenius University grants) and collaborates with several institutions nationally and internationally.
