1st Department of Neurology of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava and of the University Hospital Bratislava has been the oldest department of neurology in Slovakia. Immediately after the establishment of the Comenius University in 1919, the then Neuropsychiatric Department was one of the nine departments to lay the foundations for a new medical school. Professor Zdeněk Mysliveček was the first head of the department. In 1950 the neuropsychiatry was divided into two separate fields – neurology and psychiatry - and professor Jozef Černáček, who was the author of an excellent and timeless textbook Neurological propedeutics, became the first head of the autonomous neurologic department. The 1st Department of Neurology has been a place where the foundations of Slovak neurology were laid and the most important Slovak neuroscientists emerged from. At present, after major restoration work, the 1st Department of Neurology provides the highest quality services in the field of neurology. The department belongs to the most important research institutes of Comenius University in Bratislava and acquired the status of Centre of Excellence for diagnosis and treatment of stroke within the framework of EU operational programme. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including the 3rd degree of university study in the Slovak and English languages.
Institutional (in-patient) care:
Total number of beds - 64, including:
Intensive care unit – 9 beds
Centre for sleep medicine – 4 beds
Within the institutional care, the focus of the department lies mainly on the diagnosis and treatment of:
- Cerebrovascular diseases,
- Demyelinating diseases,
- Seizure disorders,
- Neuromuscular diseases,
- Degenerative diseases of the nervous system,
- Disorders of the peripheral nervous system,
- Vertebrogenic disorders,
- Neoplastic diseases of the nervous system
- Disturbances of sleep
Institutional (in-patient) care: The total number of beds is 64, of which the intensive care unit has 9 beds, and Centre for sleep medicine has 4 beds. Within the institutional care, the focus of the department lies mainly on the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular, demyelinating, seizure, neuromuscular, degenerative, vertebrogenic, sleep, neoplastic peripheral nervous system disorders.
Student facilities: There 4 rooms for practical education/lectures ready for the students with audiovisual equipment and with the possibility of on-line viewing of current CT / MR images, as well as equipment for teleconferences. Students may use 2 separate rooms for examination of the patients.
