2022/2023 Placement test

English Language for Health Sciences UNIcert® III

in the academic year 2022/2023

will take place on September 26, 2022 (Monday) at 5:00 p.m. 

at the Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava, Moskovská 2, room no. 107 (subject to change).

You can participate in the placement test after sending an application (electronically) to the e-mail address valeria.jamrichova@fmed.uniba.sk.

Successful completion of the test is a condition for participation in the course. The aim of the placement test is to determine the language level, it is not aimed at professional competences. In the case of equality of points, the date of submission of the application is decisive.

International project of professional language training

Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava was granted accreditation to two language programmes by UNIcert® LUCE (Language Accreditation Unit for Universities in Central Europe) in 2010:

- English for Health Sciences - level C1 – UNIcert® III

- German for Health Sciences - level C1 – UNIcert® III

 

Currently, we offer only English for Health Sciences - level C1 – UNIcert® III

 

UNIcert® III is an international educational and testing programme which is the only academic educational language programme in central Europe which:

 

  • provides professionally and academically oriented language instruction for specific purposes on a high level,
  • provides a possibility to obtain a certificate of language competence on advanced level C1 – proficient user (effective   operational proficiency, according to CEFR),
  • supports students´ mobility (study placement at a university abroad),
  • proves high language competence in pertinent field for future employers.

 

The programme reflects particular conditions at our faculty and requirements of UNIcert® LUCE. It covers two semesters of language instruction for specific purposes – medicine, according to the Schedule of full-time study at  FMED CU and an additional  48-hour language course (2 semesters). The requirement of 120 contact lessons of instruction is thus fulfilled. The costs of tuition, examination and certification are paid by the student.

The framework directives of the system UNIcert® as a programme of foreign language instruction for specific purposes was set by the Language Centre of Technical University in Dresden, German Association of Language Centres, Language Teaching Institutes and Institutes of Foreign Languages in 1991. This programme is a respond to the processes of uniting Europe, new forms of cooperation between European universities, especially students´ mobility and growing internationalisation of trade, industry, science and research. UNIcert® programme can be accredited at four levels (I – IV), corresponding to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages B1– C2 and the following documents are closely linked to it:

COURSE - conditions for enrolment

Conditions for enrolment in the preparatory two-semester course (48 hours)

1. The applicant must be a student, graduate, or employee of the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava.

2. The recommended language level of the applicant is B2+ according to the Common European Framework of Reference.

3. The applicant must have successfully completed the subjects Foreign Language 1 and Foreign Language 2 at the Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava in the relevant language in the scope of 72 teaching hours.

4. By sending the application (electronically), the applicant will show a serious interest in the course of the given year, and only after successfully passing the placement test (in the second half of September) will they be officially enrolled in the course (information about the placement test and the list will be available on the website).

Successful completion of the placement test is a condition for admission to the course.

In the case of a higher number of successful applicants than 15, preference will be given to those who expressed interest in the course earlier. The interested party will be registered after payment of the course fee.

5. Interested parties who do not plan to take the exam to obtain the UNIcert® III international certificate, or who do not meet all the conditions, can also register for the course. Upon completion of the course, they will be issued a certificate of course completion.

6. The condition for opening the course is a minimum number of 12 interested parties.

7. The course starts in the first half of October of the given year and runs concurrently with teaching in individual semesters.

UNIcert® III exam - conditions

The conditions for awarding the UNIcert® certificate follow the framework regulations of UNIcert® and the examination regulations and regulations approved by the management of the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava.

1. The applicant must be a student, graduate, or employee of the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava.

2. The participant of the course must regularly participate in learning the target language in the range of 120 contact teaching hours on the relevant level of the UNIcert® system.

3. After completing 120 hours of professional language training, the participant has the right to register for the exam to obtain the UNIcert® language certificate.

4. Those participants who have failed the exam twice, or have been excluded from the exam, cannot apply for the exam.

5. In justified cases, the examination committee may grant an exception to point No. 1, and in the case of proving the level of equivalent knowledge also to point No. 2.

6. The exam fee is €60, which is non-refundable in the event of an unsuccessful exam.

UNIcert® III exam - scope and form

The UNIcert® III level exam consists of an oral and a written part and lasts a maximum of 240 minutes.

1. The oral exam consists of two parts and lasts a maximum of 60 minutes: - a presentation in the target language and subsequent discussion - interaction in the target language

2. The written exam consists of three parts and lasts 180 minutes: - tasks testing reading comprehension - tasks testing listening comprehension - tasks for written production in the target language, which draw content from various areas of medicine and correspond to the topics covered in the course.

To pass the exam successfully, it is necessary to obtain a minimum of 60% in EACH of its parts.
