Activities of the Institute

Implemented Activities:

 

On April 10, 2025, our institution hosted the expert lecture titled Artificial intelligence and wastewater based epidemiology for healthcare infection prevention. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Jorge Salinas, an infectious disease specialist and hospital epidemiologist at Stanford Health in California, USA. In his presentation, Dr. Salinas presented advanced strategies for preventing hospital-acquired infections, highlighting the potential of artificial intelligence and wastewater monitoring as tools of modern epidemiology. The lecture provided valuable insights that can significantly contribute to more effective infection prevention and control in healthcare settings.

  

On February 20-21, 2024, the Institute of Epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, is organizing the conference Academy of Epidemiology – Prevention in Medicine. The aim of the event is to emphasize the connection between preventive and clinical medicine and the role of epidemiology in both areas.

The Institute of Epidemiology organized a seminar on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in November 2024, focusing on various aspects of STIs, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The seminar program was rich in expert lectures and discussion covering topics such as HPV vaccination, approaches to HIV-positive patients, symptoms and treatment of various STIs, as well as testing and self-testing options for HIV and other infections. Among the speakers were experts in the fields of epidemiology, dermatovenerology, urology, gynecology and infectology. The seminar provided participants with valuable information and practical advice that they can use in their practice to improve patient care.

 

In September 2024 Prof. Bražinová participated in the World Congress of Epidemiology 2024, organized in Cape Town, South Africa. At this event, apart from getting inspiration for the state-of-the art teaching and research in epidemiology, Prof. Bražinová initiated collaboration with renown world-class epidemiologists, such as Miguel Hernán (Harvard School of Public Health), Miguel Porta (International Epidemiological Association, the main editor of A Dictionary of Epidemiology) and Taryn Young (Stellenbosch Unviersity, Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics). The collaboration will hopefully result in excellent experts lecturing at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius Unveristy in Bratislava and our teachers, doctoral students and undergraduate students spending research and education stays at outstading international institutions.

The Institute of Epidemiology organized a seminar on mental health for all students of the faculty in March 2024. The aim was to rase the awareness on mental health, symptoms of mental disorders, mental health promotion and mental health services.

The speakers were an epidemiologist, a psychiatrist, psychologists and people with experience with mental illness. The event included moderated interactive discussion with students and a knowledge quiz.

 

 

The Institute of Epidemiology, in collaboration with the League for Mental Health, is offering our students the opportunity to undergo free training in the Mental Health First Aid course. The program’s objective is to train people in being able to talk about mental health, understanding its boundaries and limits. The main expected output is improvede overall knowledge and awareness in the field of mental health and the ability to help others in a state of mental crisis. The vision is to build a support network at our faculty, thus improving the mental health of students at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University. The first round of registration was in spring 2024.

 

 

On February 15-16, 2024, the Institute of Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, organized for the first time the Academy of Epidemiology - Prevention in Medicine conference. The aim of the conference was to present practical examples of the application of the results of epidemiological surveillance and epidemiologic studies in all levels of disease prevention.

 

 

 

On October 24, 2023, the Institute of Epidemiology organized a seminar on vaccination for all students of the faculty

The aim was to increase awareness about vaccination in general, with a special focus on influenza.

The speakers were an epidemiologist, an immunologist, an infectologist and a pediatrician. The event included moderated interactive discussion with students and a knowledge quiz.
